We are always looking for new volunteers to contribute to our community activities. We offer a wide variety of opportunities and always try to accommodate an individual's skills and interests.
The roles that we are currently most in need of are:
- Patient transport drivers (using own car)
- Drivers for young carers/older people's social trips and outings (using the Westbank minibus - training provided)
- Telephone befrienders
- Skill-building volunteer supporters
Befriending: visiting a family or an isolated elderly person in their home Download Information Sheet
Telephone Befriending: making a regular phone call to an isolated older person at home
Patient transport: drive people to medical appointments in Exeter, Exminster and the surrounding area. Volunteers use their own cars or can borrow the Westbank people carrier. Flexible time commitment. Download Information Sheet
Social groups and trips: facilitating social groups and trips for older people, chatting, serving refreshments.
Cook and Chat: support and encourage people to cook in their own homes. Clients may be learning to cook for the first time or have lost confidence due to changed circumstances or ill health.
Walking: leading short health walks in the local area. Download Information Sheet
Gym Club: assisting the gymnastics coach with groups of children aged 15 months to 12 years. Download Information Sheet
Exercise classes: support the running of balance classes and other exercise classes - welcoming clients, setting up equipment, taking part in exercises, serving refreshments.
Family Time: helping out during a 2 hour session when parents / carers bring their preschool children in for fun, structured play. Download Information Sheet
After School / Holiday Club: helping with play activities, chatting with children
Day Centre for older people: chatting, playing games, serving lunches etc. Download Information Sheet
Kitchen: helping our cook to prepare lunches for Day Centre visitors. Download Information Sheet
Charity Shop: welcoming people, serving drinks, sorting & pricing donations, using till. Download Information Sheet
Admin & Hospitality: supporting the running of the organisation with various admin and hospitality tasks (e.g. filing, typing, organising teas & coffees for meetings). Download Information Sheet
Sitting: giving a carer a break by sitting with cared-for person in their home. Download Information Sheet
Skill Building Project:
The Westbank Skill Building Project gives people with additional needs opportunities to develop skills and improve self confidence by taking part in community volunteering projects in a supported group. Current projects to get involved with are:
- Conservation in Yarner Wood (in partnership with Natural England)
- Painting and Decorating - various venues across Teignbridge and Exeter
- Play skills placements - Westbank and Newton Abbot
Skill-building Project Volunteer Supporter: supporting volunteers with additional needs to make the most of the activities above.
Skin Cancer Awareness Champions: if you have personal experience of skin cancer, or have an interest in raising awareness, this project offers volunteers the chance to tell their story in schools and community settings, raising awareness and changing attitudes to sun safety and early diagnosis.
